Solar Cars Print E-mail
ImageA practical solar powered car has been a dream for years. Well, it's here! A solar car is an electric vehicle powered by solar energy. The energy is collected from solar panels attached to the surface of the car. Photovoltaic(PV) cells convert the suns energy directly into electrical energy. Cells are grouped into strings or circuits. A solar car has a solar array. A solar array consists of hundreds of photovoltaic solar cells converting sunlight into electricity. Cars use a variety of solar cell technologies; most often polycrystalline silicon, monocrystalline silicon, or gallium arsenide. The cells are wired together into strings while strings are often wired together to form a panel. Panels normally have voltages close to the nominal battery voltage. The goal is to get as many cells in as possible. Designers then encapsulate the cells protecting them from weather and breakage.

Solar cars are designed to keep friction and weight minimal while maintaining strength. Titanium and composites are usually used for good strength-to-weight ratio.  So far it hasn't been perfected to a practical consumer level. Solar cells are still pretty fragile. Also, usually there's only seats for one or two people in a solar car.

But, research is zooming along. Solar cars acually, can operate for limited distances without the sun. Solar cars usually have three wheels. Some solar cars have four wheels. Three wheelers usually have two front wheels and one rear wheel. The front wheels steer and the rear wheel follows. Four wheel vehicles are set up like normal cars or like three wheeled vehicles with the two rear wheels close together.

The World Solar Challenge is a solar powered car race, held twice a year. In one race solar vehicles raced over 3021 km through central Australia, often at speeds greater than 100 km/h.
Other big races are Suzuka and Phaethon. Suzuka is a yearly track race in Japan and Phaethon was part of the 2004 Olympics, in Greece. The 2005 North American Solar Challenge, ran from Austin, Texas, to Calgary, Canada. The race promotes research for solar-powered cars. Teams from universities and industry participate. Solar cars race in competitions such as the World Solar Challenge and the American Solar Challenge.

These events are often sponsored by Government agencies, such as the United States Department of Energy. Universities participate in these competitions as challenges to their students' engineering and technological skills. Many professional teams have entered competitions as well, likes teams from GM and Honda.

Solar Water Heating: A Comprehensive Guide to Solar Water and Space Heating Systems (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series)
Solar Water Heating: A Comprehensive Guide to Solar Water and Space Heating Systems (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series)

Heating water with the sun is almost as old as humankind itself, and it is done all over the world. Yet there are strangely few resources on the topic in North America.

Solar Water Heating fills this gap. It reviews the history of solar water and space heating systems from prehistory to the present, then presents the basics of solar water heating, including an introduction to modern solar energy systems, energy conservation and energy economics. Drawing on the author's experience as an installer of these systems, the book goes on to cover:

  • Types of solar collectors, solar water and space heating systems and solar pool heating systems, including their advantages and disadvantages
  • System components, their installation, operation, and maintenance
  • System sizing and siting
  • Choosing the appropriate system.

Since people often get turned off by the up-front cost, the book focuses especially on the financial aspects of solar water or space heating systems, clearly showing that such systems can save significant costs in the long run. Well-illustrated, the book is designed for a wide readership from the curious to the student or professional.

Bob Ramlow is the solar thermal consultant for the Wisconsin Focus on Energy Program. The owner of a renewable energy company, he has over 30 years experience with solar energy systems and is a founder and director of the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA). Benjamin Nusz currently works as a solar water heating consultant and site assessor in Wisconsin.

Every 2 years, a huge solar car challenge is held in Australia where teams from all over the world compete and drive from the top of Australia (Darwin) to the bottom (Adelaide), a journey of a few thousand kilometers! The cheapest car was build at a cost of around 10,000 Australian dollars while the most expensive was 1.3 million Euros (Pictured vehicle)! Hope you enjoy my collection, i know i enjoyed being there and taking the pictures!

Brunton ADC Pro Atmospheric Data Center
Brunton ADC Pro Atmospheric Data Center Whether you're riding the rapids in a whitewater kayak or reading the barometric pressure trends when the fish are rising, the Brunton ADC Pro atmospheric data center gathers and records all the key weather conditions. The ADC Pro displays such information as relative humidity, heat index, dew point, barometric pressure, and wet bulb, so you'll always know the current conditions and what's around the corner. Let your partners believe you're predicting the rain with some sort of mind-bending, supernatural powers. Brunton will take care of the science.

Humidity and heat index are just a couple of the ADC Pro's vast data capabilities. The unit also measures the relative air density, altitude, temperature, wind chill, and wind speed (in km/h, mph, ft/s, m/s, or knots), along with the barometric pressure and temperature trends over the past 24 hours. More importantly, it absorbs all the data and predicts the weather over the next 12 hours, so you'll know whether to turn back from a hike or trudge on. Users will also dig the ADC Pro's multiple alarms, including an alarm that sounds when storms approach, an altitude alarm (for when users ascend too quickly), and a wind chill alarm.

The ADC Pro is valuable from a training perspective as well, with an integrated chronograph, race timer, and ski run counter. Additional features include a water flow meter, a real-time clock with date information, and manual and automatic data logging. The waterproof ADC Pro, which runs on a single 3-volt lithium battery, can even transmit its information to a PC via its IR interface for further analysis. As a final bonus, the unit carries a two-year warranty.

What's in the Box?
ADC Pro, detachable lanyard, extra lithium battery, user's manual.
